NEWPORT SPRINT RELAY
EVENT INFORMATION

Thursday 17th July, 6.30pm
The Riverfront (UNDER George Street Bridge, by Castle Bingo), Newport, NP20 2BP

We look forward to seeing you all at our relay event for 2025. Please could you share the following information with your team(s) prior to the event.

Newport Sprint Relay

Parking

1. Please try to car share wherever possible, as there is limited on street parking.

2. There are several car parks close by within a short walking distance. Emlyn Street, Kingsway, Friars Walk, Riverfront by Riverfront Theatre.
 

Toilets

1. There are no toilet facilities available on site. The nearest toilets are at the University of South Wales, Newport Campus, or Friars Walk Shopping Centre (upstairs by bowling).


Race HQ / Registration

1. HQ will be held under George Street Bridge from 5.30pm. (w3w ///nests.reward.sports)

2. Registration will open between 5.30pm & 6.10pm for race number collection.

3. Team race numbers can be collected only by Team Managers.

4. Please bring your own safety pins to attach your bib to your top. Bibs must be worn on the front of vests/tshirts.


Bag Drop

1. There will be no secure bag drop but there will be an area at registration where bags can be left at your own risk, under George Street Bridge during the race. 

Race Briefing

1. There will be a race briefing at 6.15pm under George St Bridge. It’s imperative that all runners are present & listen to this before the race starts. 

Rules

1. Teams of 4 runners. Each team member will be allocated a race no marked with A, B, C or D.

2. Runners must run in the order declared on the entry, which bib numbers worn on the front.

3. Marshalls will call the number of the incoming runner to ensure that the outgoing runner is waiting in the Start/Finish area.

4. All other runners must remain in their allocated pen, until told to move by marshals.

5. No headphones are to be worn to allow you to clearly hear instructions from the marshals. As the course is not closed off to other pedestrians.

Start & Finish Funnel

1. The race will start at 6.30pm prompt with Runners A starting on mass at the start line.

2. Runners B – D will be directed by marshals into their appropriate holding area pens under George Street Bridge before the race commences.

3. There will be NO group warm up, so all runners taking part are responsible for themselves and doing a sufficient warm up before the race commences.

4. The incoming runner will pass over the finish line, and tag their team member, where their finishing time will be recorded. 

5. Incoming runners must tag the outgoing runner by the hand in the Start/Finish area marked by flags 

5. When running into the finish area, after tagging your teammate, incoming runners must stay to the left and carry on running into the finish funnel on the riverfront path as directed by marshals.

**Please do not stop and keep moving into the finish funnel (in order) marked ‘Finish’ until you are clear of the course. This is very important as marshals will note your bib number.**

Course

1. This is an approximately 1 mile out and back flat route on the pedestrian path by the Riverside, starting under George Street Bridge. This is a pedestrian path and NOT closed off to the public.

2. The route is not straight, there are a few sharp corners that runners will need to navigate. So being vigilant of on coming runners, pedestrians, cyclists or other path users is essential.

3. The path is mainly tarmac, or cobbles. Be aware, there are some tree roots coming through the tarmac in certain parts, so please be aware. 
 

 Relay Route


1. The race will Start & Finish on the riverfront pathway, UNDER George Street bridge. Outgoing runners will head out on the pathway keeping the River Usk to your left-hand side. 

2. At the halfway turning point there is a mini roundabout on the pathway which you will go round in a clockwise direction. From here, you will run back towards the start line (with the River Usk now on your right-hand side. At George Street Bridge you will then run around the carpark under the bridge before tagging your teammate in the Start/Finish area. All 4 participants will complete the mile leg each. 

3.To complete the race, the 4th (last) runner needs to run through the finish line and into the finish funnel.

4. All runners are to stay in order as you move through the finish funnel, where your bib number will be noted. 

5. There will be plenty of marshals in hi viz out on the course, please listen for their instructions.


Important - For runners’ safety and the public, please keep left unless overtaking. This is a public pathway which is not closed off to the public, the same as at Riverfront Parkrun, so please be respectful to others on the path during the race. 

After Race / Prizes / Cake Sale / Celebratory Drinks

1. Water and biscuits will be provided to participants after the race.

2. Please note this is not a chip timed event. We will provide a total team time. 

3. There will be prizes for the following categories:

        a. Male team of 4

        b. Female team of 4

        c. Mixed team of 4

4. Prize presentations will take place in race HQ under George Street Bridge shortly after the last finisher has finished.

5. We are having a cake sale to raise money for our chosen charity which will be announced on social media before the race. So please bring some cash with you on the night if you would like to make a donation and enjoy the cakes!

6. Everyone is invited to join us at Hortons Lounge after the race from 7.30pm onwards for some celebratory drinks. Please come along and join us!
